My Opinions
The Greatest Films Ever Made
- Gone With the Wind
How could you not get swept away by this gorgeous epic- not to mention the suave
Clark Gable as Rhett Butler. At a running time of approximately 5 hours, it still
isn't long enough!!
- Singing In the Rain
I have seen this film over 30 times, and it still makes me laugh. The music and
dancing by Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, and the late Gene Kelly (I am
still in mourning) are pure magic.
- Mary Poppins
This, in my opinion, is the greatest film ever to emerge from the Disney Studios.
This was Julie Andrews' only Disney film, yet she has been inducted into Disney's
Hall of Fame. How could you not love this film, guv'nor?
- The Wizard of OZ
Sure, we've all seen it a zillion times. But to me, each time is magical.
Judy Garland's and Ray Bolger's (the Scarecrow) performances are no less than
amazing. While in the 1990s, we take these seemingly primitive special effects
for granted, in its day, this movie was no less than stunning.
- It's a Wonderful Life
Although critics blasted this beautiful film as "Capra-corn," there is a simple elegance
to the movie's message. I can watch this film endlessly, and before NBC recently bought the
rights, I would watch this film as many times as possible on TV. When
I watch contemporary movies, it saddens me that films which celebrate the human spirit
without sliding into schmaltz or religiosity are no longer made.
Now, narrowing this list to just 5 was not easy. But the above five films have either
touched or influenced my life in a very special way. However, I want to give
honorable mention to the following 10 films:
- When Harry Met Sally
- The Muppet Movie
- Disney's Beauty and the Beast
- The Music Man
- E.T.
- Raiders of the Lost Ark
- Airplane!
- Forrest Gump
- Schindler's List
- Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Now, I don't mind if you disagree with me (well, not much, anyway).
To decide the best films for yourself, I recommend
The Internet Movie Database (IMDB), a superior film website.
