Every now and then you come across a movie that really inspires you, makes you think or leaves you with a different perspective that lingers. These are the movies that interest me... the ones that capture my attention and imagination.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is by far the most complex, immersive movie I've ever seen in my life. I'm not sure if it's just me reading things into it, but I thought it would be a good idea to dedicate a page or two to my own personal interpretation of what this movie is about and what's going on. I don't have all the answers but I think I have enough of an understanding to "get" the core plot and ideas in the movie. I've read other people's interpretations and I have to say no one else seems to have picked up on what I truly think is the true meaning behind much of the symbolism.
Miracle Mile There's something about pre and post apocolyptic movies that really grabs my attention. There's a sort of "last person on earth" feel to this one mostly because he's the only guy that knows what's going on, or at least thinks he knows. There's some unanswered questions about a few things but that's always a plus in a movie for me, it allows you to fill in the gap with your imagination and mine is so active that I'm able to happily chew on these plot holes by substituting all sorts of fun ideas to explain them.
Last Night was simply an awesome movie... it's everything I love, it's the pre apocolyptic movie where everyone is in on it and deals with issues of intimacy, loneliness and desperation, the urge to survive... it's a commentary (in my mind anyways) of the insignificance of our daily motivations and pursuits and how they do nothing to elevate us but everything to distract us from being aware of our true nature. And it's chock-full of missing information which I always love because like I mentioned, I have a great time inventing my own backstory!
The Quiet Earth isn't as good as it could have been, but it's still thrilling, if I had to guess as to why I love these types of movies, this one especially, I'd say it's because I've always felt like an outsider. Like I was completely alone in the universe and no one could ever hope to even begin to understand where I'm coming from. Movies like this show me other individuals living how I feel I live... completely alone in the world. But they have the added bonus that they're also physically and literally alone in the world. They're not alone AND constrained by the need to work, make money etc to survive.
Millenium is a movie that deals with time travel... it deals with being on the inside of an investigation, and on the inside of a group of time travelers, and these two insiders meet and enrich each other's lives. And there's some fun stuff going on in the background... there's so much fun stuff to think about in this movie. I really enjoy the scene where the planes are crashing, I know that sounds morbid but it's not for sick sadistic reasons, it's because I can really find myself getting immersed into this movie, into that situation and basically live through a plan crash in the comfort and safety of my home.
The Arrival has lots of beautiful elements which are truly indicative of Mexico, it's people and it's culture. Right down to the colors of the buildings, the interiors of the hotels... it's so perfect, I feel like I'm there in Mexico while watching this movie. The director did a lot of tight shots of the surfaces in the interior of the hotel room, mostly to denote plot points but it makes this a real treasure of a movie and it brings back some fond memories of the time I lived in Mexico.
eXistenz makes me sick... it's so incredibly immersive, I actually start to get anxious and fidgety around the same time as the characters are feeling the same way... it's hard to explain but even though the overall feeling of this movie is negative and icky, I like it for it's ability to feel so incredibly immersive that it makes me feel so ill at ease.
Dark City is another movie that's very immersive and mind altering. It's an awesome experience because stepping away from this movie or watching it till the end gives you this palatable sense of switching gears in your consciousness. It's like a feeling of going from sleeping to waking state... you're a little disoriented and have to get your bearings for a bit before you can honestly say you know you you are and where you are and how those peices of information tie together.
Batman is a real awesome movie, it's unfortunate that a few really bad sequels have sullied the name of this work of art. Everything is so stylized and steeped in meaning, there's a few sections that fall flat but I think it's because of the personal meaning of the environment in the scenes. Jack Nicholson was awesome as the Joker, if the whole Vicky Vale thing had been removed and this had just been a movie about Batman and The Joker, I think it would have been better.
Groundhog Day is a fun movie, I really like Bill Murray's comedic style, so dead pan... it's great! This is another "insider" type movie where the character is an insider and no one else can seem to help or understand him. It's my favorite genre with a comedic twist, and a comedic twist that appeals to me which is rare. Definitely a favorite
Price of Darkness is one of those movies that very very few people can appreciate, but since I happen to understand it I'm very fond of it. I've explained to people and I've explained why I like it, but the irony of what the movie was about doesn't thrill them at all.
There's more but I'm done for today! :)
