Episode: This is one of the better episodes. Despite an extremely slow moving movie the riffs really make it worthwhile. The waffle theme is, ummmm, different but I like it.
Short: A boring short film which attempts to make a course in Home Economics bearable. Ick! Some good stuff in there, one of my favorite lines is I took several heavy blows to the cheeks with a lead pipe cracked me up it did. Definately worth a watch or two.
Movie: This movie was so slow! Honestly I'd like to see what parts of the movie didn't make the final cut, this whole film could have been done in ten minutes and not lost any of it's plot or dialogue. This felt like a typical Sunday-noonish-nothing-to-do-may-as-well-watch-tv movie.
Invention Exchange: Frank has decided to become a vegetarian so since he can't do anything with all the meat he has stored in freezers he decides to bring the meat back to life, with the Meat-Reanimator. He brings a chicken back to life, then the chicken turns on Frank and pulls a knife on him. Joel invents a Waffle Iron, it takes an ordinary waffle and turns it into a flat waffle.
Host Segments: Joel reprograms the bots to love waffles as much as he does, then has them come up with new and important uses for waffles...
Gypsy: Dr, Schools Waffle pads
Tom: Acoustic Tiles
Crow: Waffle Desk Organizer
Joel comes out eatting waffles, movie sign lights and sound comes on and he throws them up in the air.
Servo is really full and wonders if the world wouldn't be a better place, without waffles. Then he gets visited by Willie the Waffle, the wonderful whimsical wisecracking waffle who gives some examples of how the waffle is an important piece of Americana. Joel helps the bots out but he doesn't seem too into it. He's dragging his feet and doing his lines in a monotone voice. Even Tom Servo comments: Nice read there, Joel. Hmm, I don't get it. Why was Joel so uncooperative, was it part of the skit? (Click here if you can to explain it to me)
Conclusion: Joel & The robots sing a waffle song apparently (according to the book) My friend's VCR cut off before the show finished. Sad, really.
Book: Mike Nelson mentions that he remembers rejecting a lot of strong ideas for the Waffle theme. And wonders if he didn't pass up something special. I wonder that too. What exactly were some of the ideas presented that did not make it? So if there were such things as alternate universes where every decision is played out, what other skits might have we seen with Viking Women and the Sea Serpent?
Favorite Lines:
Viking Chick: How long have we waited on
these cold cliffs for a sign of our returning men? In Vain?
Tom(As Viking Chick): Lets put it this way, you're
starting to look pretty good to me!
Favorite Observations:
We hear the crack of a whip, yet no one on
screen even has a whip!
Joel: Who is he whipping? That foley guy is just way off
script!
Personal Experience: The first time I saw this one, my friend had brought me my first batch of Tapes (I don't get Comedy Central) before this I was restricted to one hour of MST 3K a week. Then I'm hit with two six hour tapes of it. I tried to pace myself, really I did! The short was pretty hilarious the first time around but for some odd reason I cannot get into it again. I was probably just giddy from excitement the first time. I have also adopted lines from this episode for everyday use. Specifically the part where Crow, as Senja says Oh Daddy, I don't wanna be a Hunter I wanna be a singer, a poet, and actor or dancer.. ... help me please I'm being attacked by a ham sandwich! which I pretty much say anytime I'm in distress. (Yes, I'm weird, ok?) Also, I was very motivated by the whole Waffle theme. It prompted me to buy waffles. Then the moisture settled at the bottom and when I put them in the toaster the ice crystals on the bottoms ones made them all gooey and they dripped down into the crumb tray, I had to unplug the toaster and remove the bits of waffle gunk as best I could with a fork. But then I called Kellogg and they sent me a coupon for four free boxes of waffles! Thanks, MST 3K!
I also found that I was very influenced by pretty much anything they mention. For example, when Joel is talking about Waffles, Tom says : Joel, It's lunchtime, buddy, and I'd much rather have a Manwich or a bologna sandwich. Which isn't exactly an ad for Manwich but that very week I was at Safeway picking up a couple of cans of Manwich and some Ground Beef. I then had Manwich for the very first time. I didn't like it much and thought I'd never use the second can, but I saw VWatSS again at a later date and got a jonesing for some Manwich, and I had some. As I remember this I'm begining to like the taste of Manwich, in fact, I think I'll go buy some after I finish this page up. Obviously I'm not going to get anything they mention, I've had Bologna and don't much care for it so I was not motivated to buy any. But I had never tried manwich, and despite the fact that I did not care for it, the memories of it, since they related to MST 3K, were pleasant so I've acquired a taste for it. I wonder if the makers of Manwich will pay Best Brains for that mention?
