System16 News
(1/10/98) With all the clamor over MAME .30 these days, nobody else seems to have anything to report. But tonight Thierry Lescot (ShinobiZ) made a surprise visit to #mamegames, and announced that Alien Syndrome has been added to System16! Fortunately, we won't have to wait so long for this one, as it will work with pre-release .70. an updated GCS file is planned to be posted within a few days of now. A screenshot of Alien Syndrome in action can be found below.
(12/30) Although there remains no word on a release date, Nao is making progress on adding support for Super Hang-On! Currently, the game is not ywet playable, due to the fact that the dual CPUs are not emulated yet, but the colors are right, and it looks like this one will be ready for the next System16 release.
Also, taking a look at the recently redesigned website for System16, it becomes obvious that there's still plenty of ground that can be covered by this emulator. The main barrier to this is that the ROMS to a lot of the system16 games are encrypted. I'm sure that Thierry and Nao would not mind having some info on the encryption scheme used here... Take a look at this page for a list of some of the encrypted ROMs that run in system16/system18 hardware.
(11/30) It's been about a month since we last heard anything on the progress of System16, but today, the news page on the System16 homepage was updated with the latest on the progress of the next version. Joystick support has been added, and sound is being worked on. Also in the works is savegame support for the dual-68000 games such as Hang On and Out Run. As is the case with just about any other emulator out there, no release date has been set so far.
(11/1) With the complete Out Run ROMs in the hands of NAO, work has proceeded quite nicely, and the emulation is now nearly perfect! The controls and sound still remains to be emulated, but once this is done, perhaps we can expect a new release of System16 soon!
(10/31) Despite last week's disappointing news that Thierry was leaving the System16 project, this week the news is good. The complete set of Out Run ROMs (including the sprites) is now in the hands of NAO, and given the progress that has been made on Out Run without the sprite ROMs, we can hopefully expect this to be working in the next version of System16. In other news, Thierry reports that since his resignation from the project, he has been getting lots of appreciative e-mail for his efforts, a far cry from the thoughtless flaming from before. We need to let the emu authors know what we think of their efforts and the time spent on their work, before the lamers do.
